Porsche identity.

Many myths tell the past.
This one is about the future.

What makes the 911 so special? Sportiness? That is definitely a factor. More than 28,000 race wins? Certainly. Our company's engineering credentials? Without a doubt. However, what really matters is ensuring that the 911 continues to be an enthralling, exciting sportscar.

Take the new, more angular design and longer wheelbase, for example. Or the downsizing and upgraded engines that deliver more power but with lower fuel consumption, thanks to efficiency technologies such as auto start/stop, thermal management or vehicle electrical system recuperation. This is what intelligent Performance is all about.

Design.

With its clean and simple yet exceptionally sporty elements, any child would recognise a 911: the downward sloping roof line, the wings set higher than the bonnet and the muscular rear end. The 911 is known for its low, wide, sleek stance.

So, not much has changed since 1963 then? Yes and no. The wheelbase has been extended by 100 mm for improved road holding and cornering abilities. Coupled with the reduced vehicle height and wider front track, it conveys an impression of pure performance.

The rear end is clearly sharper with defined angles. Given their narrow shape, the new LED taillights emphasis the horizontal contouring at the rear. Bigger wheels come as standard on both models: 19-inch for the 911 Carrera and 20-inch for the 911 Carrera S, each one an inch larger than on the previous model and enhancing the sporty presence of the new 911.

The stainless steel tailpipes have been restyled on both models, as has the wider, extending rear spoiler for increased downforce and therefore better handling.

With the cohesive feel and high quality materials, the interior is sporty and functional. The elevated centre console features an intelligent operating concept, while the five instruments are classically arranged with the rev counter in the centre. The advanced instrument cluster, including a high-resolution 4.6-inch TFT full-colour VGA display, is just an aspect that makes the vehicle suitable for everyday use in inimitable Porsche style.

Engineering.

ln terms of technology, the future of the sportscar starts here. The new 911 Carrera is powered by a new 3.4-litre flat-six enginefeaturing direct fuel injection (DFI) and VarioCam Plus. Even with less displacement there is more power and the engine develops 257 kW (350 hp) at 7,400 rpm. The maximum torque is 390 Nm available at 5,600 rpm.

As a consequence, the new 911 Carrera with its new, highly efficient seven-speed manual transmission accelerates freom 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.8 seconds. Its top speed is 289 km/h (180 mph). The figures with optional Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) are 4.6 seconds for the 0 to 100 sprint and a top speed of 287 km/h ( 178 mph).

The new 911 Carrera S features a completely redeveloped 3.8-litre flat-six engine that also has direct fuel injection (DFI) and VarioCam Plus. This produces an output of 294 kW (400 hp) at 7,400 rpm and maximum torque of 440 Nm at 5,600 rpm.

With the seven-speed manual transmission the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes 4.5 seconds (4.3 seconds with PDK), reaching a top speed of 304 km/h (189 mph) or 302 km/h (188 mph) with PDK.

That covers performance, which on the new 911 is by no means at odds with efficiency. Both engines are more dynamic than their predecessors, yet still consume up to 16% less fuel thanks to efficiency technologies that show the way forward.

As standard, these include the auto start/stop function, vehicle elecrical system recuperation and intelligent thermal management, as well as the new energy-saving electro-mechanical steering system. With PDK comes the 'coasting' function where the combustion engine automatically shuts off to save fuel.

When it comes to driving enjoyment, the SPORT button is standard spesification for a sportier setup. The electronic engine management gives the engine more bite at the touch of a button and the engine dynamics become more direct. Available as an option, the Sport Chrono Package including dynamic engine mount system provides simultaneous enhancement for chassis, engine and transmission. Components include a performance display and SPORT PLUS button.

Braking performance is also an  intrinsic part of the Porsche identity. The 911 Carrera uses four-piston aluminium monobloc fixed callipers, where as the 911 Carrera S has six-piston aluminium monobloc fixed callipers at the front and the four-piston variety at the rear. The Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) - a brake system that has already had to cope with the toughest requirements of motorsport - is available as an option for both models.

Full-size airbags for both driver and passenger provide a high level of safety, together with Porsche Side Impact Protection System (PSIP) as standard and Bi-Xenon headlights with headlight washer system, dynamic headlight levelling and driving light assistant.

There are many words to describe it, but only three numbers that get straight to the point.
