The future of the sports car:
wide open again.
The new 911 Carrera Cabriolet models.
Sometimes you have to keep an open mind. Look at something in a different way. Tread your own path. Especially if you have set yourself ambitious goals for the future. You achieve them by being open - to new ideas.
This is the direction explored by the new 911 Carrera Cabriolet models: ground-breaking engineering for the hood, light-weight materials and an integrated wind deflector. For a new kind of freedom that broadens the appeal of the sports car.
Design.
A roof line that tapers to the back. Wings that are higher than the front lid and add muscle at the rear. The result is a characteristic silhoutte with a clear identity: 911.
With the 100 mm longer wheelbase and the low roof line of the latest 911 generation, the new 911 Carrera Cabriolet models are especially striking.
In detail: thanks to their oval surround, the new Bi-Xenon headlights retain a classic appearance. The separate front light units contain LED direction indicators, daytime running lights and position lights. Together with the two integral air intakes, they give the 911 Carrera Cabriolet models their undermistakable look.
The hood has been completely redeveloped. In addition to the fixed glass rear windscreen, it consists of three integral supporting elements which are manufactured from magnesium. These make the hood highly robust and particularly lightweight. Electricallt powered, it opens or closes in approximately 13 seconds - up to a speed of 50 km/h (31 mph). Another advantage of the new design is that the hood is smooth and firm. The fabric fits tightly to the structure making the styling lines especially elegant and enabling a low drag coefficient of 0.30.
The interior hood lining is made from a heat-insulating and sound-absorbing material. This helps to maintain consistent interior temperatures and effectively suppress wind noise. What you hear instead is the unmistakable sound of your 911.
Also new is the wind deflector that comes as standard. This operates electrically - in only two seconds. Fitted or mounted? That's the past. It is now directly integrated into the body.
The rear feels much sharper, thanks to the distinctive profile edge and the new LED taillights with a stretched design that accentuates the horizontal contouring. The reflector units are positioned lower down - very characteristic, especially at night.
The stainless-steel tailpipes have been restyled. In the S models, twin tailpipes are fitted on both sides. Another new feature is the wider, extending rear spoiler which reduces lift in all driving situations and increases driving stability.
The interior is particularly impressive thank to the high level of comfort: two-zone automatic climate control, Sports seats and 25 mm more legroom at the front. Especially striking is the elevated centre console. Its intelligent operating concept is aimed at one clear priciple: direct simplicity. The characteristic Porsche engine sound is complemented by the standard CDR audio system with 7-inch colour touchscreen.
Technology.
Our engineers also set ambitious targets for themselves with regard to efficiency - and they achieved them. Through the downsized capacity of the new rear-mounted 3.4-litre 6-cylinder Boxer engine in the 911 Carrera Cabriolet, featuring direct fuel injection (DFI) and VarioCam Plus. Maximum power: 257 kW (350 hp) at 7,400 rpm. Maximum torque: 390 Nm at 5,600 rpm. For the 911 Carrera Cabriolet with a 7-speed gearbox, this means acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 5.0 seconds. Top speed: 286 km/h (177 mph).
Impressive figures, which are even better in the new 911 Carrera S Cabriolet. Its completely revised 3.8-litre Boxer engine - also with direct fuel injection (DFI) and VarioCam Plus - delivers 294 kW (400 hp) at 7,400 rpm. The maximum torque is 440 Nm at 5,600 rpm. So, the new 911 Carrera S Cabriolet with 7-speed gearbox accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.7 seconds and has a top speed of 301 km/h (187 mph).
Both engines deliver more power than the previous model - but fuel consumption has been reduced by up to 15%. This is thanks to a number of efficiency improving technologies, such as the auto start/stop function, electrical system recuperation and intelligent thermal management, as well as the new energy-saving electromechanical steering. Also, with Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK), the 'coasting' function - travelling with the combustion engine automatically switched off.
High reserves of power naturally require high reserves of safety. An effective roll-over protection system, Porsche Side Impact Protection System (POSIP) and full-size airbags for driver and passenger come as airbags for driver and passenger come as standard. As do Porsche Stability Management (PSM) and a powerful braking system, which is typical of Porsche.
The wheels are one-inch larger than those of the previous model. That means 19-inch wheels on the 911 Carrera and 20-inch wheels on the Carrera S.
In summary: a well-defined concept with a strong identity. With the courage to change - and follow new directions.
